VULCANIZED FIBRE

Material: Available in: , , ,

Material Information

Vulcanized fibre is a laminate material formed by the reaction and crosslinking of pure cellulose cotton in a zinc chloride acid bath. It possesses high tensile and tear strength, excellent arc resistance, and both good electrical and mechanical properties where moisture is not a factor. Vulcanized fibre is available and in tube, rod, strip, and sheets in a variety of thicknesses. Sheet is available in the colors black, grey, and red. Thin flexible vulcanized fibre has superior electrical properties and also superior bending qualities. Vulcanized fibre is easy to machine, and has a maximum operating temperature of 400º F. It is easily bent, sawed, sheared, punched, milled, turned, and drilled. It is also insoluble in ordinary solvents and unaffected by alcohol, ether, ammonia, turpentine, naptha, benzene, and petroleum.
Commercial Grade: Most common grade, available gray, black or red. Applications include washers, gaskets, gears and handles.
Electrical Grade: High dielectric gray, 100% cotton, very flexible, (historically called “fish-paper”). This grade is suitable for layer and ground insulation and has variations, including “top-stick” grade used for wedges in small motors.
Bone Fibre: Exceptionally hard and dense, used for tight machining, tubing, pool cue tips, and cut out fuses.
